Unique boutique shops, jewelry stores, and home décor stores line the streets of Kamloops' downtown. Victoria Street in particular has a charismatic atmosphere with a mix of great stores housing brand name apparel, shops perfect for picking up unique souvenirs, and sidewalk cafes to warm-up within where you can enjoy a seasonal coffee or meal.
Downtown Kamloops is home to a vibrant arts and culture community. Live music venues dot the downtown core, ranging from open mic nights at coffee shops to large international performances hosted at the Sandman Centre entertainment facility. Live theatre productions from Western Canada Theatre are hosted at the Pavilion Theatre and Sagebrush Theatre, only minutes from the hotel. The Kamloops Art Gallery, artist-run boutique shops, and photography galleries are plentiful in the downtown core, many with free admission to welcoming those who just want to browse.
Kamloops’ downtown is a hub for the craft brewing industry. Local beers are made on site at Red Collar Brewing, just two blocks from the hotel. Another great choice is the Noble Pig Brewhouse, which is only one block from the hotel. Kamloops is Canada's Tournament Capital which means there is never a shortage of sports events happening in the city. The Sandman Centre ice arena is a 5 minute walk from The Thompson Hotel and home of the WHL league's Kamloops Blazers. Memorial Arena and the Kamloops Curling Club are both one block away from the hotel, thus providing a variety of lacrosse, curling, and Kamloops Minor Hockey for spectators to enjoy.
Kamloops in the winter has a number of exciting places to visit with kids. After a long day travelling or in meetings, lace up your shoes and head out for a run. Of note is the Rivers Trail, a paved trail winding through the urban landscape that takes runners through parks, along the river, and past public art installments. Kamloops has over 82 parks, with two of the city’s signature parks just minutes from The Thompson Hotel. Pioneer Park has ample free parking and is a great spot to sip a warm drink while taking in the view. Take a walk along the Rivers Trail, a paved path that is part of a 40 kilometer network of trails. During winter months, snow along the trail is maintained by city crews.
